Fulfill your dream – become a captain!

What will you get?

  • You will learn skills and knowledge and be able to manage a yacht independently.
  • You will get an international captain’s license
    (ICC for pleasure crafts up to 24m sailing up to 60 nm from shore).
  • You will be able to participate in local and international yacht regattas.
  • If you like to relax with friends or family – you will be able to rent boats in the most popular or exotic sailing destinations.

Who can apply?

  • Anyone interested to learn sailing and boat handling with or without previous experience;
  • You do not need your own equipment, we will provide the yacht during practical training and further trainings.
  • Separate courses are organized in Latvian and Russian language.

  • Captains’ school at City Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most experienced schools in Riga.
  • Our teachers are high seas captains with a lot of experience in sailing and teaching. There is also experience in sailing around the world!
  • After the training, you will be able to continue training at the yacht club, enriching your skills and experience.
  • We provide emotional and practical support during your first independent vouages.
  • There is not only a well-equipped training base, but also a great family of sailors in the club.

What is the content of the courses?

  • Theory – twice a week, 3 hours, for 3 months: meteorology, navigation, yachting in extreme conditions, sailing ethics and other topics that are necessary to successfully pass the exam.
  • Courses are organized in small groups.
  • Individual training is also possible.
  • Practice of boat handling takes aproximatelly 3-20 hours. Yacht maneuvering, mooring, driving in different weather conditions.
  • After the exame, you can continue to practice in the yacht-club, together with other cadets to deepen your knowledge and skills.

When and where?

  • We organize courses 3 times a year:
  • 👉 March – May;
  • 👉 September – November;
  • 👉 December – February.
  • 👉 couses in Latvian – Mon. Wed. 18:00 – 21:00.
  • 👉 couses in Russian – Tue. Thu. 18:00 – 21:00.
  • Practice and exams: May – October.
  • 500 nautical miles practice: takes place in Greece, the Baltic Sea or other waters by agreement with the group members.
  • Theoretical and practical lessons take place in the City Yacht Club, Riga, Ķīpsala, Balasta dambis, entrance opposite house No. 36.

*City Yacht Club is a public benefit organization. All income is used to support the children’s sailing school, maintain the infrastructure, and for other purposes specified in the statutes.

Our teachers

About City Yacht Club sailing school

Our sailing school is founded in 2007. Since 2013 the school is certified by the CSDD and the Latvian Sailors’ Union for obtaining the International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC certificate)

We provide theoretical training for all categories of ICC certificate (IS, C1S, C2S, C3S, IM, C1M, C2M, C3M) and practical training for all categories (IS, C1S, C2S, C3S).

Classes at the school are conducted by experienced sailors with the qualifications of a long-distance sailing captain and experience in course management.

All courses are held in City Yacht Club, Riga, Balasta dambis
